Sumi-e Teacher Heather MacDonald
Since the late 1990’s Heather has been engaged in the study of brush painting. She began the study of Japanese calligraphy in Ottawa with Mme Tomoko Kodama, a Japanese master painter who developed unique methods to teach western students. Along with her fellow students, Heather had opportunities to participate in exhibits in Ottawa and in Japan. Heather also briefly studied with Mr. Rujin Qin, a master painter in the Chinese tradition, and with another revered teacher, Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi from the United States. She has done commission work, including book covers for Japanese style poetry books, and she is also a published Haiku poet. Her passion for the art of brush painting informs many of her other interests and when her beloved teacher, Mme Kodama, retired in 2010, she encouraged Heather to begin teaching at the Ottawa School of Art.
Whether we are studying a traditional subject, working on a meaningful character or painting a pumpkin, our practice helps us to become disciplined, to seek out the quiet moments and most of all relax, laugh and find joy in our painting!
